"Everything was beyond our expectations. The quality of clinical care was beyond our expectations. The cost savings were excellent – we researched various other facilities ranging from $60,000 to $250,000. India’s facilities at Medanta exceeded our expectations and the cost was extremely cheap considering the procedure was 7 hours long, with 2 weeks in the hospital with all food covered. MMC provided excellent services in facilitating high quality treatment and taking worry out of every step in the process. If it was not for Hemani, we would not have been able to organize the treatment as quickly and efficiently as she did. We couldn’t have done anything without you – we are so grateful!" - Christina (John’s daughter).

John had Robotic assisted heart surgery at a fraction of cost in India at a world class institution. He had a medical condition for which he required heart surgery. However, he explains that the risks involved in open heart surgery were too high for them (John and his family) to take their chances and through their research they had determined that the Robotic heart surgery (minimally invasive key hole heart surgery using Robotics) was the way to go as it offers many more benefits than the traditional open heart surgery and potentially has better clinical outcome. In Australia, Robotic heart surgery is extremely expensive. It costs approximately $60,000 in Australia in private hospitals. Further, Robotic heart surgery is not done frequently over here. Therefore, John and his family were looking for the options i.e. medical choices and found MyMedicalChoices.
John’s story is of an ordinary Australian from Western Australia who was keen to have Robotic heart surgery. He underwent robotic assisted mitral valve replacement, recovered well in a luxurious hotel in India and flew back to Australia lately. He and his family are extremely happy.
John was operated by India’s eminent cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Naresh Trehan at Medanta-Medicity. He experienced world class treatment at Medanta, an Institute which matches the highest standards of healthcare delivery across the world. Medanta brings together the state-of-the-art infrastructure; cutting edge technology; a highly integrated and comprehensive information system; along with a quest for exploring and developing newer therapies in medicine. A one-of-its-kind facility in this part of the world, through research it will integrate modern and traditional forms of medicine to provide accessible and affordable healthcare.

Robotic assisted heart surgery is a least invasive treatment alternative for even the most complex procedures, such as mitral valve repair. Robotically-assisted technology allows surgeons to perform certain types of complex heart surgeries with smaller incisions and precise motion control, offering patients improved outcomes. In robotic surgery, small incisions – less than 2 inches – are used, compared with the 3- to 4- inch incision used in traditional minimally invasive heart surgery or 6- to 8-inch incision required for traditional surgery. The benefits of minimally invasive and robotic heart surgery techniques include: a smaller incision, a smaller scar, decreased risk of infection, less bleeding, less trauma, including less pain, decreased length of stay in hospital after surgery, division of the breastbone or spreading of the ribs is usually not needed for robotically-assisted heart surgery. The recovery time and return to regular activities is shorter for patients who undergo robotically-assisted heart surgery as compared to open heart surgery. Thereby, Robotic assisted heart surgery potentially has better clinical outcome than open heart surgery.
Therefore, family was keen on Robotic assisted heart surgery. The amazing photograph of John is a follow up visit after the surgery. In the photograph is Dr Naresh Trehan and John.

John received highest level expertise in Robotic heart surgery at a fraction of cost in world class hospital, Medanta – The Medicity.
In Australia, Robotic heart surgery is performed in private hospitals in Melbourne and is very expensive. Also, as per our understanding Robotic Heart surgery is not done frequently. The cost of the procedure is approximately 60,000$ in Australia. In some facilities in the world, the cost of Robotic heart surgery can range from $60,000 to $250,000. The cost of Robotic heart surgery in India is $13,500-14,000 in a world class institution which was very affordable. The total cost including travel and accommodation for 4 people, pre-operative, operative, post-operative stay in private room in hospital and recuperative (recovery stay) in a luxury hotel was significantly less and making it affordable. The family enjoyed great Indian hospitality.
In addition, one of the family members took the advantage of high quality dental treatment at a cost which is 1/3 as compared to over here. It made a perfect sense!
Medical tourism is an area of great interest to the community. On that note, John doesn’t really like word ‘medical tourism’. He prefers to call it medical treatment overseas or medical choices (joking says that’s what it is MyMedicalChoices).
Probably there are many people who can relate to his story, benefit from it and see the results from Robotic heart surgery. If you would like to speak to John about his experience in more details, please do not hesitate to contact us.
MMC facilitated the treatment in India and all arrangements were made from airport pick up to return in advance. After contacting and making an informed decision, the family of four decided to go to India. All arrangements were made in advance from airport pick up to return for the family.
MMC continues to deliver excellence in healthcare facilitation. Our vision is to serve our clients by facilitating high quality and affordable clinical care in cosmetic, dental, surgical and medical treatments.

Important Note: Not everyone is a candidate for these surgical techniques. Your surgeon will review the results of your diagnostic tests before your scheduled procedure to determine if you are a candidate for minimally invasive surgery. The surgical team will carefully compare the advantages and disadvantages of minimally invasive techniques versus traditional surgery techniques.

Some strategies to mitigate risk while considering overseas treatment!
These are:
|
 |
Research – Do your own research |
 |
Health Care Facilitator (HCF) – Due to growing medical tourism, for lots of tourist companies it seemed to be a logical extension of their business – providing medical packages to the people travelling overseas. It would be sensible to work with a HCF, who understands the medical practices in the country that you are planning to get your treatment and have a good understanding of the hospitals’ and doctors’ capabilities. You should not be taking lightly the selection of your doctor and/ or hospitals. Nothing can replace the experience and expertise of somebody who has worked in the overseas facilities and has a good understanding of the medical practices overseas. |
 |
Making an informed decision – The HCF should be able to assist you further in making an informed decision in a number of ways depending upon HCF’s background and experience. If they can provide you peace of mind while you are still in Australia or your country, it might be worth considering your option for overseas surgery. |
 |
Support – Support of family and friends is invaluable when considering overseas major surgery. |
 |
Time: Please do not underestimate how important it is to have ‘time’ on your hand. Make sure you have enough time and is flexible to extend your stay in visiting country if you need to do so. Do not rush through the things. Please listen to the doctors/specialist advice overseas as you would do in your country.
